Cake Smash Prep Guide
A cake smash session is a fun and joyful way to commemorate this milestone in your child’s life. Take this opportunity to capture your child’s delight as they tear into their first real taste of sugar!
What to Expect
Cake Smash sessions last about 60 minutes. The beginning consists of milestone pictures, in which I capture the personality of your little one alone. Next I will begin by taking pictures of your little one in their cake smash outfit before introducing the cake. Once we bring in the cake, the photo session takes approximately 20-30 minutes. I let your baby set the pace, as some little ones dig right in and destroy the cake, and others need a little bit of encouragement and sometimes even help to get into their cake. Be ready to get your hands dirty and help your little one get past all that frosting to the cake underneath!
What to Wear
I provide a single outfit for your baby to enjoy their cake in. The outfit will match or compliment the set-up you chose. I suggest bringing one or two other outfits from home for your babies portraits and single family photo. If you plan to order any outfits from Etsy or Amazon, please be sure to order the outfit within plenty of time prior to the session.
I hope that your little one makes a huge mess! That’s the whole point of this session, and most fun of the day. We let your baby set the pace, as some little ones dig right in and destroy the cake, and others need a little bit of encouragement and sometimes even help to get into their cake. We’ll finish the session with a splash in a tub, so please bring a clean outfit for the ride home.
All of my cakes are purchased through The Boarding House in Massillon. I have them use vanilla cake and buttercream frosting. All cake designs are approved by the photographer and parents prior. I order cakes 2-3 weeks in advance and pick up 24-48 hours prior to the session. Once cake orders have been places, they can not be changed.
If you are purchasing your own cake, please order your cake no later than a week prior to your session. Ordering last minute can cause cakes to look rushed or missed instructions. Select a small cake or large cupcake, approximately 4-6 inches around. Buttercream frosting is preferred since it's soft for babies. Please make sure that there are no fondant, gum paste or pearls on the cake as those can be choking hazards for your baby. Toppers are welcome but will removed as your baby digs deeper into the cake. Small sprinkles and edible glitter are okay. Be sure the colors of the cake match the theme of the session.
If you're picking up your cake days/weeks in advance, you should freeze the cake (most cakes expire within 24-72 hours). Chill the cake in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours to harden the frosting, then take the cake out of the fridge and wrap gently in saran wrap and place in the freezer.
** If your fridge or freezer is too small to hold the box the cake came in, it's okay to remove the cake from the box. Just make sure to keep the box for safe transporting.
To thaw, move the cake from the freezer to the fridge 26 hours prior to the session. 1-2 Hours prior to the session, remove the cake from the refrigerator to allow the frosting to come to room temperature. That way the frosting is soft and easy for your baby to destroy.
To transport the cake, place the cake back in the original box and place the box carefully on the floor of your car. I personally use towels around the box to keep the box from sliding around.

Things to Bring
1) Cake (if applicable)
2) Outfit for portraits prior to cake smash
3) 1 additional outfit for your baby as backup
4) Change of clothes for yourself, just in case, cake smashes are extremely wet and messy
5) Diapers & wipes
6) Sippy cup to help wash down the cake
7) Snacks (think cheerios, or puffs) in case they don’t like the cake. I sometimes have to hide them the cake to make it look like your little one is actually eating the cake. Ssshhh.. If you don't tell, we won’t :)
8) A favorite toy
9) Change of clothes for parents, just in case
After the session: "How/When do we see our photos?"
That’s a great question! Upon completing your session, your images are immediately backed up. Once safely backed up, I cull through and carefully choose the best images.
Then I edit one for a sneak peek. This image will be posted on my facebook business page within 48 hours of our session.
My turnaround time for your full gallery is 1 week. I try my best to over deliver, I just pick the best moments to edit and share with you but I do guarantee at least 15 images.
Once I've finished editing your session, I will upload it to Shootproof. This is a photo gallery hosting website. Then I send you the link and you are free to download, print, and share your images.
